Sometimes we can slip into relating to God as though He were merely a distant lawgiver—or worse, an abstract idea. But God is personal. He desires relationship, not empty ritual. We do not obey in order to be forgiven; we obey because we have been forgiven. Read Hosea 6:6 aloud. Then use the reflection and prayer prompts below to guide your time with the Lord.

  • Reflect: When you think about God, what comes to mind? Father? Savior? Law-Giver? Concept? Impersonal Force?
  • Pray: Thank God for being a personal Father who desires relationship with you. If necessary, ask God for forgiveness for forgetting his personhood.
  • Reflect: Though we no longer burn sacrificial offerings to God, can you think of a modern-day ritual that can become an empty gesture?

  • Reflect: Think back to the time you first called upon the Lord? What was the state of your soul at that time?
  • Pray: Thank God for listening to you when you cried out to Him.
  • Reflect: Since then, how has your life been different?
  • Pray: Praise the Lord for setting your feet upon a rock. Thank Him for his kindness.
  • Reflect: Do you know someone who is living in a pit of destruction? Maybe they have no idea of the danger they are in.
  • Pray: Ask God to help them cry out to Him for mercy. Pray for God to step in and change their story.

  • Pray: Ask God to make Enon into the kind of church where people regularly encounter God's saving and transforming power. Pray that far-from-God people in our community would come to know Him through the faithful witness of ordinary believers.

The Lord is blessing Enon with numerical and spiritual growth during this season. We do not want secret sin or disunity to disrupt what God is doing in us and through us. In Hebrews 12, the author exhorts us to make every effort to pursue unity and holiness. Read the passage below. Then use the reflection and prayer prompts below to guide your prayers.

Therefore lift your drooping hands and strengthen your weak knees, and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be put out of joint but rather be healed. Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord. (ESV)
  • Reflect: Have you grown weary in your walk with the Lord? Have you begun to tolerate any “respectable” sins? What warnings does this passage offer about spiritual apathy?
  • Pray: Ask God to expose any unhealthy areas in your heart and life. Invite Him to search you and make specific what needs to change. Pray for renewed strength and joy in your walk with Him.

  • Reflect: As far as it depends on you, are you living at peace with everyone? Though no one is perfect, would others describe your life as marked by holiness?
  • Pray: Ask God to give you a heart that pursues unity and peace. Pray that He would show you any specific steps you need to take toward reconciliation or forgiveness. Ask Him to protect Enon from disunity and from patterns of unholy living.

The Holy Spirit has been given to every believer, in part, to give us gifts to serve the common good of the church body. Today we will pray through 1 Corinthians 12:4-7, which shows God's heart to empower us for the sake of the church. Read the text aloud. God desires His church to be marked by deep and lasting relationships. We are not merely people who gather in the same place; we are members of the same family. In Colossians 3:12–14, Paul describes how we are to relate to one another as God’s chosen people. Read the passage aloud, then use the reflection and prayer prompts below to guide your time of prayer.

Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. Reflect: Is there a person or even a group in the church you find difficult? How does being reminded that every believer is “chosen, holy, and beloved” shape the way you view them—and yourself?

Reflect: This passage tells us to forgive as the Lord has forgiven us. Is there anyone you need to forgive?

We live in a performative culture, and if we are not careful, that mindset can shape our spirituality as well. Do we know God only in public, or do we walk with Him in a personal and intimate relationship? With this in mind, we will let Matthew 6:6 guide our prayer time today. Reflect: What has the Lord asked you to give up in order to follow Him faithfully? Have you obeyed Him?

Pray: Ask God to give you eyes to see the value of knowing Jesus. Pray for spiritual power to reject lesser things that crowd out God's presence from our lives.

Reflect: Are you ever tempted to avoid God because of recent sin? How does being made righteous through faith in Christ affect your ability to enter God's presence?

Pray: Pray that God would empower Enon to live by simple faith in Jesus. Ask for Him to help us reject a performance-based religion in favor of a grace-based relationship with Him.

  • Reflect: Has there been a time when reading God's Word has changed my mind or confronted my behavior? What kind of effect does scripture have on my mind?

At Enon, we plan and participate in many religious activities—and these are essential. Yet it’s possible to engage in them while our hearts remain far from God.   • Pray: If you are unsure of your spiritual gift(s), ask God to reveal how He has equipped you. If you do know how He has gifted you, ask Him for wisdom and faithfulness to steward those gifts well in service to others.

  • Reflect: This verse identifies some gifts as "speaking" gifts and others as "serving" gifts, though it does not elevate one type over the other.

Oh sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth! (v1)

  • Reflect: Is there a new song in my heart, or has my affection for God grown familiar, routine, or cold?
  • Ask: Ask God to awaken fresh love, joy, and wonder in your heart toward Him.
  • Practice: Before continuing in prayer, consider pausing to sing a song of worship—letting even an old song become new in your heart.

Sing to the LORD, bless his name; tell of his salvation from day to day. Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples! (v2-3)

  • Reflect: Am I quick to speak about God’s saving work in my life? Do I look for—or avoid—opportunities to talk about what the Lord has done?
  • Ask: Ask God to help you recognize and courageously step into opportunities to share His work in your story.

For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; he is to be feared above all gods. For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols, but the LORD made the heavens. (v4-5)

  • Reflect: Think of someone you know who is not following Jesus. What are they trusting in for hope, identity, or security? What has taken the place of God in their heart?
  • Ask: These things cannot ultimately satisfy and will always fall short. Ask God to lovingly reveal Himself to this person, that they would see Him as more worthy of worship than anything else competing for their devotion.

Am I abiding in Jesus? Are His words empowering my daily life? Are my prayers shaped by God’s will revealed in scripture or are they mainly self-centered?
