Day 21

Prayer Point

Today we’re praying for simple faith and devotion—not just religious activity.

Sometimes we can slip into relating to God as though He were merely a distant lawgiver—or worse, an abstract idea. But God is personal. He desires relationship, not empty ritual. We do not obey in order to be forgiven; we obey because we have been forgiven. Read Hosea 6:6 aloud. Then use the reflection and prayer prompts below to guide your time with the Lord.
Hosea 6:6
For I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings. (ESV)
  • Reflect: When you think about God, what comes to mind? Father? Savior? Law-Giver? Concept? Impersonal Force?
  • Pray: Thank God for being a personal Father who desires relationship with you. If necessary, ask God for forgiveness for forgetting his personhood.
  • Reflect: Though we no longer burn sacrificial offerings to God, can you think of a modern-day ritual that can become an empty gesture?
  • Pray: Pray that God would infuse every religious activity at Enon with life and meaning. Ask for the Holy Spirit to empower our worship and obedience.
